Guizhou Medical Tour Oct 5-10, 2004
Lynck launched an indigenous Medical Team for free check-ups for the students of the schools we helped to build. The team was formed mainly by 13 graduates and senior students of Zunyi Medical School. We provided medication for some of the common diseases among village school kids as well as promoted hygiene in these mountain areas.

Mountain School - A mountain village school under a precious and atypical sunny sky of Guizhou.

The Children - Children waiting for their medical checkups. Some lined-up in the courtyard...

Some waited inside while reading...

Squatting faces...

For most if not all of them, it was their first checkups. All schools are without supply of clean water...

... so the children cannot wash their hands in school.

Preparations for vision check.

Note the simple chart put on the classroom wall outside.

Vision Checks happening indoors and outdoors.

Doctors needed to teach students how to respond to the chart readings. It was a challenge to teach some of the younger students.

Sometimes, other checkups happened concurrently, in this case, for ear, nose and throat.

Eye Checkup - The doctor checked 880+ eyes on this day. The team found that many students had trachoma infections. The physical body sizes of most students were found to be smaller than those of students living in Zunyi, a mid-sized city 2-4 hours away. This shows some physical underdevelopment.

Mouth & Neck Checkup - Many were found to have swollen lymphatic glands under the chin...

...combined with gum affections.

Dental Checkup - The dentist pulled many teeth which were already very loose because of renewal. However, this pupil was out of luck.

His old and new teeth overlap and we did not bring the proper tool to get rid of the stubborn old one.

Abdomen Checkup - "Take off your shoes..."

"... and lie on your desk."

There's a case of swelling in the liver/spleen region that requires further testing.

Wet Shoes - There's a saying in Guizhou: "No three sunny days in a row, no shoes remaining dry for two days."

Doctors and Children - Amid checkups...

... after checkups...

... and during a gathering for hygiene talk.

Hard Work - Doctors also helped carry the medical supplies for mountain villages. It's easy on the rice patty path on sunny days ...

... but the wet surface of the dirt after rain reflects the road of doctors.

Momentos - A pupil gets his or her big check-up cup after completing checkup.

The cup contains a tooth brush, toothpaste, a towel and soap.

All were told no to share these supplies with others, including parents and siblings.

The Team - 13 graduates and senior students of Zunyi Medical School formed this team coached by director Leng. There was an unplanned break of half a day and a sightseeing trip to a giant-fern park full of ferns from the age of dinosaurs.

The team spent 5 days touring mountain villages and inspected 1100+ students.
